A Sermon About "Nothing"

·       Today, I have nothing to Say.

·       Today, I have nothing to preach about.

·       Today, I have nothing to present to you as a serm.on.

·       Today, I have nothing for you to remember.

·       Today, I have nothing for you to take home with you.

·       Today, I have nothing to challenge you with.

·       Today, I have nothing with which to impress you with.

·       Today, I have a "Sermon About nothing."

·       Today, I want you to get nothing out of this sermon…

·       Sometimes something is nothing

·       At other times nothing is really something.

·       Sometimes we know nothing about something.

·       It is important that we know something about nothing!

Did you realize that Nothing is Biblical…

Within he pages of scripture – you will find Nothing about Something… And Something about Nothing… But you will never find Nothing about Nothing…

·       nothing appears some 342 times in the Bible.

·       nothing appears some 229 times in the OT

·       nothing appears some 113 times in the NT

Therefore, some 342 times the Holy Spirit had nothing to write, so, He had it written…

nothing should be easy for some people to understand…

nothing greatly affects our lives…

Let’s investigate what God's Word has to say about nothing:

2 Corinthians 6:10 - "As nothing and yet possessing all things."

Galatians 6:3 If anyone thinks he is something when he is NOTHING he deceives himself."

Titus 1:15 - "But to those who are corrupted, and do not believe, nothing is

 pure"

1 Corinthians 2:2 "For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you

except Jesus Christ and Him crucified."

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines NOTHING as: something that does not exist -or- the absence of all magnitude or quantity…

Conventional wisdom says that "When something is nothing" it means that it is completely absent, nonexistent, or has no value or significance; essentially, it is like saying there is "no thing" present at all…

However, with God you can throw conventional wisdom out the door, because He doesn’t operate within the wisdom of man…

When it comes to God’s Word, we need NOTHING MORE… NOTHING LESS… and NOTHING ELSE…

Let me try and explain this… Listen closely, because I don’t want to leave anyone behind… Is nothing something? If nothing is not something (in other words if nothing is simply nothing) then why do we give it a name?

Clearly the fact that we choose to identify nothing with the word "nothing" suggests that nothing is something. Furthermore, if it were the case that nothing was nothing (and not something), then what would be the use of having the concept of nothing - when nothing is nothing?

However, if nothing is something then is it really nothing? Clearly if we have the concept of "nothing" it is so we can refer to the lack of "something" and if nothing was something then the definition of nothing as the absence of anything seems to have been violated…

Finally, if nothing is something then everything must be nothing! This follows from the fact that if nothing is something then there is nothing which is something! Let me explain that again, if nothing is something then "nothing is not something" is false which means "everything is not something" is true and thus everything must be nothing!

Which man concludes: Is nothing something? No! Nothing is nothing! The reverse is true with God… God says Nothing is something… For Nothing is impossible for God! Matthew 19:26 tells us"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible Hopefully, I have made myself clear…

Therefore today, I will share with you "A sermon about nothing."

LET US PRAY: "Heavenly Father, as we gather today to contemplate the vastness of 'nothing,' we humbly acknowledge that even in the absence of form or substance, Your presence remains constant. Open our hearts and minds to the mystery of creation, to the space where possibilities exist beyond our understanding. Guide our thoughts as we explore the concept of 'nothing,' not as emptiness, but as a canvas upon which You are continually painting Your divine masterpiece. May we find meaning and wonder in the unknown, and may Your Spirit illuminate our hearts with the truth that even in 'nothing,' You are always present. We pray this in Jesus' name, Amen!"

LET ME BEGIN BY ASKING You A QUESTION: are YOU aware that God Created the World from Nothing?

Now that is an astounding statement . . . It is also an astounding truth!

Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

Hebrews 1:1-3 "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets

at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven”

Psalm 33:8-9 - "Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be he commanded, and it stood firm."

Billions of dollars are spent on what man cannot accept by faith… Many of the most brilliant and highly educated minds today, and in ages past, cannot accept the first ten words of the Bible . . . "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."  Genesis 1:1

It is no wonder then that they keep trying to refute the other 783,078 words that follow Genesis 1:1.

They have substituted false theories (including evolution) and have incorporated nothing in place of faith.  When it comes to the Bible, they chose to believe nothing about it…

For Example:

·       They chose to believe theories rather than facts.

·       They chose to believe men rather than God .

·       They chose to believe their colleagues rather than their Creator.

·       They chose to believe academic writings rather than the Bible.

·       They want you to take them at their word but not God at His word.

In the very first verse in the Bible God establishes the five elements of science:

1.    Time - "in the beginning"

     2.   Force - "God"

     3.   Energy - "Created"

     4.   Space - "Heavens"

     5.   Matter - "Earth"

Man can create and build many things from materials at hand . . . But man cannot create something from nothing as God can . . . And as God did!

Let me share an illustration:   A scientist once challenged the need for God; he argued that he could create humanity just as well as any God could. God said, “Okay, go ahead and do it.” The scientist began to gather some dirt, but God said, “Wait a minute. Make your own dirt!”

Though this story is only a fable, the point is clear: God is the only One who can create from nothing. God made all the material of the universe, including our world, our possessions, and our bodies. He is the legitimate owner of everything…

How can he create life from nothing?  He has to have something to work with... But where did that something come from?

YOU Can do Nothing and be lost...

Without doing anything you are already lost . . . By doing NOTHING you are already lost . . . By continuing to do nothing you will remain lost...

YOU Can do nothing without Christ.

One can do a lot of things without some things . . . But one can do NOTHING without Christ.  Christ is really SOMETHING . . .  And without Him we are nothing.

Matthew 12:30 - "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. "

Galatians 3:26-27 - "You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. "

the cross brought to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

1 Corinthians 1:18-24 - " For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world. For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it

pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.  For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God."

All the valued learning of this world was confounded, baffled, and eclipsed, by the Christian revelation and the glorious triumphs of the cross…

Matthew 11:25 - "At that time Jesus said, 'I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.'"

Faith is more important than man's human reasoning about matters pertaining to God and His revealed word…

deeds without love are nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:1-2 "I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am NOTHING."

Both attitudes and motives are important in doing God's work…

Savorless salt is good for Nothing...

Jesus saw the need to teach us about savorless salt . . . And He did in Matthew 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for NOTHING but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men."

If they be as they should be they are as good salt, white, and small, and broken into many grains, but very useful and necessary...

Pliny said, without salt human life cannot be sustained.

"Are you worth your salt?"

Our English word for salary comes from Roman word for "salt." Salt was rare and valuable . . . Not everyone had it nor could everyone afford it . . . Part of a Roman soldier's salary/pay was in salt…

What Christians are to be in themselves—seasoned with the gospel, with the salt of grace; thoughts and affections, words and actions, all seasoned with grace.

Colossians 4:6 "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

WE WIll carry nothing out of this world.

1 Timothy 6:7 - "For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it."

Psalm 49:17 - "For he will take nothing with him when he dies . . ."

A Christian's priorities are important to God…

Use God's Word and God's will as the standard to establish your priorities...

Let me remind you that your soul will depart this life without even taking your

body with it...

Conclusion:

Ecclesiastes 3:14-15 - " I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him. Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God will call the past to account."

Today . . . . . .

·        I have had nothing to say . . . And I have said it…

·        You have had nothing to hear and you have heard it...

·        You have nothing to remember, so remember it…

·        We have nothing to believe so believe it…

·        Some nothing is scriptural so understand it and believe it…

·        You have something to do about nothing, so do it…

·        This is one time you can say that I had nothing to say, and you would be

          right . . . But let's not make a habit of saying that…

In our study today we have noted seven things about nothing

1.      God created the world from nothing

2.      You can do nothing and be lost…

3.      You can do nothing without Christ…

4.      The cross brought to nothing the understanding of the wise…

5.      Deeds without love are nothing...

6.      Savorless salt is good for nothing

7.      Will carry nothing out of this world…

I CLOSE WITH THIS:

God's Plan for Man's Salvation

·        Stop doing nothing and begin doing something about your salvation…

·        Let nothing stand in your way of obeying the precious Gospel of our

         Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ…

CLOSING PRAYER: "Dear God we come before you with the emptiness of 'nothing.' In this stillness, We surrender all worries, anxieties, and desires, simply resting in your presence. Remind us that even in the absence of words or requests, your love remains constant, a vastness that encompasses all, including the 'nothing' within us. May we find peace in this quiet space, knowing that you are always here, holding us in your embrace. Amen!"
