WISDOM AND WHERE TO FIND IT

WISDOM AND WHERE TO FIND IT JAMES 1:5

Someone has said that the knowledge of ignorance is the beginning of wisdom and recognizing our lack of wisdom is a positive step toward spiritual understanding. That thought agrees with Scripture because Scripture reminds us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and that a knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Life is full of pitfalls and snares and it is comforting to know that no matter what trials we may be called upon to face, we can seek Godly instruction and guidance from the Lord and He provides spiritual understanding. He not only provides that spiritual understanding, He has promised to give fully all that is needed for the task.

Here, James is particularly speaking about the wisdom we need when faced with the various difficulties and dangers we encounter in our everyday lives. There are times when we do not know what to do or which way to turn, but James encourages us. He says that those who lack spiritual insight have access to the Lord. We can seek that necessary wisdom. And we have no cause to doubt that He will provide as liberally as we need it.

James teaches us that trusting the Lord for Godly wisdom as we travel through the trial and the joys of life is a tool God uses to test and strengthen our faith in Him. That tool provides the patient endurance that is absolutely necessary for our spiritual growth. In order for that Godly wisdom to take hold and make a difference in our lives we are reminded that we must stand fast in the faith, without wavering back and forth from faith to doubt and from doubt to faith. James describes this in verse 6, as a wave on the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

How great is our need for God’s wisdom in the tests and trials of our lives. We encounter disappointments and heartaches. Some are those over which we have no control. Others we bring on ourselves. They are all so much a part of our everyday lives. If we want to complete the work that God has given us to do, and to do it well and pleasing to Him, and we want to learn the lessons that God has laid out for us in His Word we need only to ask for an outpouring of wisdom. As we walk daily in Him, we desire to grow in grace and in knowledge of Jesus and to grow an undivided heart with which we walk in spirit and in truth.

When we are aware of a lack of wisdom or drive in our Christian walk, we must take that positive step – “ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

God knows that we are weak and frail and He knows that the testing of our faith can cause us to complain, become unstable, and invite doubt into our mind and heart, and finally to become unsteady in our Christian walk. God provides all the wisdom we need to maintain a steady heart, patient endurance, and an unwavering, uncompromised faith. God loves to give generously to all who ask Him – but we must be humbled enough to see our need and be prepared to boldly ask for His wisdom.
